Our Policies

We want going to the movies to be a magical experience for everyone, where you get lost in the story and shut out the world for a couple of hours. That means no cell phones allowed during the movie — no talking, no texting, no browsing, no taking photos or videos. That also means no talking, no throwing things, no kicking the chairs, and no other behavior that disrupts the experience. No outside food or drink is allowed. If you violate these policies, you will be asked to leave and no refund will be given for your ticket.

About The Gentry Cinema

The cinema dates back to 1912, when it first opened as the Majestic Theatre. When the theatre closed in 1917, the space was remodeled and became a hardware store until 1940. In 1941, it reopened as Gentry Theater and operated under that name with a single 400-seat theater until the mid-1990s.

The building sat vacant and fell into disrepair until it was purchased and fully remodeled in 2007. At that time, the large theater with a balcony was split into two auditoriums – one with about 100 seats and a smaller theater with about 25 seats.

It was open for a year starting in late 2008 and again for a year starting in 2013. In 2017, the building once again changed hands and underwent renovations, including a switch to digital projectors required by movie distributors. The Gentry Cinema opened again in 2018, then closed in December 2021.

The latest chapter began in November 2024 with the cinema reopening yet again in December 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are your hours so limited?

Right now, we are open approximately two weekends a month for a couple reasons. First, we’re new to owning a movie theater and intentionally chose to start slow. Second, we don’t live in town and both have full-time jobs in addition to owning the movie theater. Once we get up and running for a bit, we hope to hire some local staff and be able to expand our hours.

How do you decide what movies to show?

That’s a great question, and a somewhat complicated one! We want to show the movies that YOU want to see. So, if there’s an upcoming release you really want us to show, stop by and let us know.

Each distributor has guidelines for how, when, and where their movies can be shown. For example, they may require that a new release movie be shown at least five times a week for three weeks in a row. If we can’t commit to meeting those numbers, we don’t get the movie. If we wait a few weeks after it’s released, we may have a little more flexibility on how many times we show it.

Co-owner Wally Wesley loves movies and especially loves watching them in the cinema. Some of the classic movies we show are movies he really wants to see on the big screen, but also movies we know hold a special place in the hearts of other people as well.

Do you offer advertising for local businesses?

Yes, local businesses can purchase on-screen ads that run before the movie begins. Other sponsorship packages are available as well. We’ll have more details on that in early 2025!

Can we rent out the theater for an event?

Yes! Rentals are coming soon!

You can rent out the entire main theater or small theater for birthday parties, office parties, or other events. We’ll even let you have a wedding at the theater if you want! Want to play video games on the big screen? That’s an option, too, but you have to bring your own gaming console.

If you want to rent an entire theater for a movie we’re currently showing, the process is fairly simple. If you want to rent the theater and watch a different movie, that requires licensing the movie, which can take some time. Please contact us at least four weeks in advance for custom showings.

Can we get popcorn to go?

Yes, absolutely! We’ll have fresh popcorn whenever we’re showing movies, and you’re welcome to come buy popcorn (or candy or soda) even if you’re not staying for the movie.
